State garden show 2014 in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany
Between „Heavenly Garden“ and „Earthly Realm“
Show gardens and idyllic paths invite to explore
Visitors to this year's state garden show in Schwäbisch Gmünd (Germany) may expect an eventful stay: Much can be discovered true to the motto „Heavenly Garden“ and „Earthly Realm“, from the landscape park Wetzgau, the so-called „Heavenly Garden“, through the adventure forest Taubental („Stairway to Heaven“) to the historic town centre, which symbolises the „Earthly Realm“.
The selected rural and urban areas represent the geographical features of Schwäbisch Gmünd and at the same time illustrate the close connection between the town and nature.
As part of the open space design following the garden show motto, lovingly designed show gardens, orchard meadows, a mysterious adventure forest and the historic town centre of Schwäbisch Gmünd, decorated with green islands and flower gates, complement each other in an attractive unit.

CITY ELEMENTS by Hess ensure illumination of the „Earthly Realm“
A luminaire for varying requirements
The sophisticated landscape architectural design of the “Earthly Realm” also sets benchmarks for the implemented lighting concept. Required was a functional lighting solution with visually understated luminaires that fit perfectly into the creatively designed green areas and the urban spaces, which were comprehensively regenerated for the garden show.
The same luminaire was to be used for all the different areas, which included streets, places, footpaths, the central bus station, gardens, and parks. Here all characteristics of the named zones were included in a comprehensive lighting concept.
„High-quality design requirements were crucial for the selection of the pole-mounted column luminaires“, explains urban planner Sabine Rieger of Schwäbisch Gmünd's municipal administration the decisive criterion for the luminaire selection. „Thanks to their neutral design, the selected CITY ELEMENTS are highly versatile and may be used for modern architecture and in the historical town centre of Schwäbisch Gmünd“, adds the architect.
Elegant design, high functionality
The understated style elements of the CITY ELEMENTS illuminating columns by Hess fit perfectly into the urban spaces of the state garden show and provide illumination conform with DIN EN 13201. The CITY ELEMENTS luminaires fulfil the various technical lighting requirements on site thanks to their individually combinable base, intermediate, and terminating elements, which are each available in two diameters 180 and 230 mm.
In Schwäbisch Gmünd, different terminating elements of the luminaires are used for different locations: The footpaths adjacent to the Remspark, for example are lined with CITY ELEMENTS luminaires with AR terminating element (rotationally symmetrical terminating element) and rotationally symmetrical light directing, while illuminating columns with AR and AA terminating elements (asymmetrical terminating element) with asymmetrical light directing are used in other parts of the town.
The illuminating columns are fitted with the energy efficient LEVO LED module with varying optical elements. They provide - depending on the location of the luminaires - either deep, extra wide or symmetrical light distribution. The selected light colour of 4000 K ensures a good colour rendering and a high feel good factor during the evening hours.
Construction of seven new bridges for the garden show
The newly constructed bridges that connect central locations along the river Rems and the stream Josefbach in the town centre are a significant feature of the state garden show. LED luminaires of the type LEDIA GL by Hess, integrated in the stainless steel handrails, ensure the illumination of four bridges. They are directly installed in the handrails of two new bicycle and footpath bridges, the rococo bridge and the station bridge.
Fitted as standard with 12 high-performance diodes per meter, the 1000 mm long lighting modules create a continuous light band that evenly illuminate the pedestrian areas of the bridges during the evening hours with warm white light. In addition, the sophisticated illuminated bridges are an interesting attraction when viewed from a distance.
