Impressive re-design of the square in front of the Bavarian National Museum in Munich – the new interpretation of an old design concept

Munich can once again enjoy one of its loveliest squares to the fullest. The landscape architecture firm, Rainer Schmidt Landschaftsarchitekten, has redesigned the public space in front of the Bavarian National Museum. In doing so, he revived the idea of a sunken forum, re-interpreting it in a modern context. During the evening and at night, the museum and the artistically illuminated forum resemble a large theatre stage – an effect that attracts the public.
Lighting installations accentuate the re-designed square
After nightfall, the RAVENNA in-ground luminaires bathe the crowns of the magnolia trees in luminous shades of rosé and green, depending on the season of the year.
The in-ground luminaires are integrated into square REGULUS tree grates supplied by the Hess company for the protection of the trees on the site. The intertwined structure of these elements create a fascinating visual effect, adding formal accents to the square.
For illumination of the outdoor stairways, the architects selected Hess's LEDIA LED strips. Due to their frameless design, they elegant fit into the stairways. Thanks to the uniformly, amber-tinted light they emit, the LED fixtures cause the stairways to appear as if "suspended" in the air.
In planning the re-design of the square in front of the Bavarian National Museum in Munich, the architects of Rainer Schmidt gave priority to the creation of pleasant spatial proportions. Another prime objective was to restore the former depth and spaciousness of the square.
Elegant LED illuminating strips impressively set the stage for the stairways of the Bavarian National Museum. The special structural design of the glass and housing components of the luminaries guarantees absolute water tightness and great resistance to impact.
The illuminated façade sets the stage for the re-designed square in front of the Bavarian National Museum.
